Rosemary and Rue

Rosemary and Rue (October Daye, #1)Rosemary and Rue by Seanan McGuire
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I'm not normally a fan of books that delve into the world of the fae, just because of how overdone it's all becoming. But, I was really surprised with this book. The way it's written reminded me of early Laurell K. Hamilton, or Jim Butcher. It's a gritty crime novel set in the world of faerie.

October "Toby" Daye is a PI in the world of fae, who finds herself cursed into a fish for fourteen years. When the curse breaks, she takes herself from the world of faerie. But the death of a close friend pulls her back in suddenly, probably sooner than she could handle. Now Toby is racing to find the killer before more people die... including herself.

Will Toby be able to integrate herself back into the world of faerie? Will her friends and family forgive her for alienating herself? And will she be able to stop the killer before it's too late?

This book was a real surprise. Toby is a smart ass detective changeling (half-fae) who trusts no one but herself, and her two cats, and who is forced into a situation that she really doesn't want to be in. She is totally relatable and likable, and you find yourself rooting for her the whole time.

The different kinds of fae she runs into, and their different knowes (worlds or kingdoms), create a changing tableau that keeps the story fresh, but still easy to follow. The crime will keep you guessing right to the end, and once you've read it, you'll want to read it again.

This book was awesome, and I can't wait to get the second in the series. If you like faeries, or have never tried reading faerie stories, this book would be a good one for you. Pick it up today, and I promise, you won't be sorry.
